Roe v. Wade: 40 Years

This week marks the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision. Abortion is legal in all states, for any pregnancy, for any reason. Since 1973, 55 million babies have been aborted. They have been killed.

Said differently, 55 million babies have been denied the right to life. They have been murdered.

And different still, 55 million made-in-the-image-of-God babies have been denied person hood. They have been massacred.

Fifty-five million is a jaw-dropping, heart-breaking, gut-wrenching, soul-crushing, God-grieving number of innocent babies. Just one aborted baby would have been too many. But today we look at the number 55 million and we can't wrap our minds around it. It's too much. Too big.

In his book, The Raging War of Ideas, Jason Jimenez breaks the statistic down even further: "Since the legalization of abortion in 1973, America has aborted over 50 million babies. That is over 1.2 million babies a year, which if broken down even further is 3,000 abortions every day, or two every minute." (p.78)

That means by the time you've read this post and watched the included media clips, roughly 16 minutes will have passed and 32 babies will have been aborted.

Watch the following clip that the National Right to Life put together. In a small way, this makes the enormous number somewhat graspable.

Albert Mohler (www.AlbertMohler.com) has a sobering post right now: "Forty Years After Roe, Human Dignity Hangs in the Balance." He gives some statistics that knock your breath and hurt your heart:

- "Over a million abortions are performed in America each year. Reports last year indicated that over 40% of all pregnancies in New York end in abortion..."

- "The vast majority (90%) of unborn children with Down Syndrome are now aborted. Sex-selection abortions are legal in the wide-open 'right' to abortion declared by the court. Prenatal testing of other characteristics means that parents can now abort a baby that does not meet their specifications and try again."

John Piper posted an interesting article at www.DesiringGod.org about abortion: "We Know They Are Killing Children - All of Us Know." In it, he offers 11 reasons why we know, all of us know, that abortion is the act of killing unborn children.

I encourage you to read the entire article, but I wanted to copy the following critical action steps you and I can take:

"For Christians who believe the Bible ... we know what is happening in abortion, and why it is wrong. But the aim here is threefold.
1. To make clear that we will not be able to defend ourselves with the claim of ignorance. We knew. All of us.
2. To solidify our conviction to resist this horrific evil.
3. To intensify our prayer and our preaching toward gospel-based soul-renovation in our land, because hardness of heart, not ignorance, is at the root of this carnage."

Piper has also written a moving poem about the millions who have been aborted, how it pains the heart of God, and how we can act on behalf of these precious little ones. Take a look:

If you still have time (a lot of media in this post!), watch the following clip. This shows the development of human life from conception to birth. It's undeniable, unmistakable, remarkable, and miraculous.

You and I know what abortion is and we know what abortion does. You and I also have a voice. Knowledge with a voice can produce action. Do something. Now.

  1. I am always awed & amazed at the utter miracle that is a baby's development in the womb. Thank you for sharing this post, you are absolutely right, abortion truly hurts my heart & I grieve for the loss of so many precious lives...not potential humans, but humans with great potential (to quote Dr. Geisler.)
