I'm Back. My heart is heavy.

Oh my goodness. Oh.My.Goodness.

We are home from Passion 2012 in Atlanta. All 31 of us had a life-changing experience and are in the throws of processing all that we saw, learned, and experienced. I have so much I want to write and share, but so little time right now to do that. And, just to clarify from my previous post, there were not 30,000 college students at Passion. There were 45,000 college students. Forty five thousand college students intentionally seeking God's face in worship and study.

My mom is in town for one more day and Micah has his fourth birthday party tomorrow. So, until I have a large chunk of time to sift through my notes and pictures from Passion, I'm putting a post about it on hold. In the meantime, there is something else that is taking front and center of my thoughts and prayers right now. Something I've wept about. Something I can't stop thinking about and so I can't stop praying about. If you feel prompted, please join me in praying for the Cooper family.

This precious family in our church needs you and I to plead on their behalf for God's favor in healing and recovery. This past Thursday morning, Marcus Cooper was in a very serious motorcycle accident. This a short status update from Marcus' wife, Sue, as of late last night:

"All, today Marcus was in a serious motorcycle accident. The aorta coming out the top of his heart was severely torn, 80% of victims w/ this die at the scene. His right leg was lost from the knee down, his left leg is dislocated but the artery down that leg unharmed. He has mid spinal injury but we are unsure of how severe, he'll have a MRI in the night. I pray that you can already see God's mighty hand at work. I have been told by others, not the hospital, that he has the best surgeons and docs around. He was conscious the entire time from the accident to the ER to me getting to see him just before heart surgery. Very coherent, very aware. They repaired the aorta and he is stable and resting. His right hip socket pushed to the back and it will need surgery. He has more surgeries to come but we are unsure what or when at this time. We (I) have been incredibly blessed by all the prayers, support and love shown. I will try to read texts and email as I can, please forgive me if I don't reply. I'm exhausted and now need to sit still, breathe and process. Love to you all."

Their two daughters, nine and four, are staying with friends of the family and long to see mommy and daddy. They don't know the full details of the situation. My heart sobs on their behalf as I ask Jesus to hold those darling girls close to his side and that this experience will bring them closer to him and that their young faith will be strengthened.

God created the universe. He holds this world in his hand. He sees the sparrow fall. All glory to him for how he has sustained this family and for how the church has flung its arms and hearts into this deep need.

  1. My heart breaks for the the Coopers. We praise God that Marcus is alive! They are never far from my mind & I am praying for them throughout the day. I cannot imagine the road they face ahead, but I trust that God will hold them close & bring them through with much grace. Thanks for sharing this post! We will continue to pray!

  4. Thank you for sharing. I work with Marcus from San Francisco. The whole team here was shocked and saddened to learn of his accident. A number of us have donated our sick time to him to help if even in some small way. He and his family are in our thoughts and prayers.
